The “Zed” models from MG – the ZR, ZS and ZT – are, for many, the final swan-song of the Rover and MG story Launched in 2001 following the departure of BMW (who up to that point had restricted MG development) the Z cars, offered first-rate driving experience, that was affordable and practical. With much adoration and interest from the motoring press, the range gave the newly founded MG Rover Group the boost they most definitely needed.
MG ZR
The MG ZR, based on the Rover 25, was and still is combines sharp handling, lively performance, and bold styling, making it one of the best small hot hatches of its era. Available with a range of petrol and diesel engines, including the high-performance 1.8 VVC version, the ZR offered genuine driving fun at an affordable price.
MG ZS
The MG ZS, produced from 2001 to 2005, was the performance version of the Rover 45. Available as a saloon or hatchback, it combined everyday practicality with class-leading handling.
Engine options ranged from 1.4 to 1.8 K4’s to the halo ZS180 for the petrol, and the now cult L-Series diesel for those who like torque! Praised for its sharp steering and balanced chassis, it became known as one of the best-handling front-wheel-drive cars of its time.
MG ZT
The range-topping ZT, took the recently launched 75 platform, and through some incredible engineering ingenuity, transformed a comfortable, wafting saloon, into a dynamic agile GT car.
Launched with the 2.6 KV6 in 160, and 190 forms, the ZT would latter benefit from the 1.8 turbo-charged K-Series, and bonkers 4.6 V8 from 2003.
The ZT and ZT-T were incredibly popular in business/fleet market, mainly with the stalwart M47 diesel provided by BMW
